 25th april 2022                          MEDIA LANGUAGE

L.O. To investigate how print and online newspapers use media language to create meaning

'News Media' -

defining all sources and presentations of information, including; TV, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines, Web pages, Etc. Any outlet where a reporters story could be printed or spoken.

What is the purpose for news?

News can be useful and purposeful in many different ways, in todays social media world, news is the reason for us having access to gossip and information. And its not just being able to follow along with your favroute celebrity, news can be anything from how the weather is in africa to what political issues are happening in russia.

The layout and Media language of a piece of news media is very important as it could tell us a lot of information on something, including wether its fake news or not.

the masthead: simple, creates a almost guide to the main columns and image.connotes watching or viewing. Could suggest that they aren't opinionated.

puff: boris Johnson in a yellow circle, connotes importance and highlights them showing what the text is linking to/ talking about.

layout: divided into two sections by the title/ masthead, connoting that the more important news is under the title, drawing our eyes to it. top section identifies some other trending subjects to bring in a target audience and draw attention to the brand and rest of paper. middle section is pretty blank shifting our attention down onto the third section which is the main paragraphs and info aswell as the main image. The whole paper is easy to look at and not too colourful with the exception of the main image and the first section.
The first section doesn't really draw away from the rest of the paper which gives the house style a very put together look.

The subheading: is big and creates a beginning for the story that is being told in the columns.

The Representations: The main image shows a british boxer that is of colour biting a medal, clearly connoting a sense of pride and importance. the use of a coloured man on the main image of a magazine cover could suggest the brand/ owners of the magazine are socialists or supporters of black lives matter. In the top section the image of a famous singer who is a black woman, this again connotes equlism and by putting famous people of race in the spotlight really shows support to those people and more importantly all the other people who can relate or who looks up to that person. It gives all those people a voice and a place to stand out. Unlike the images the text being used creates a very different feel, "pakistani" or "tory"  the use of labeling and this magazine having to adress the person, not by their name but by their race or a word that describes a certain group of people, suggests that theyre racist. It also can suggest a lot of other things.

Main Image: The main image shows a british boxer that is of colour biting a medal, clearly connoting a sense of pride and importance. This also suggests the paper/ owners supporting issues liking to race or skin colour.

minor images: Famous black woman, suggesting a shoutout type thing, also suggesting a support towards black women or all women etc.

09/05/2022           Historical case studies

l.o. to evaluate the impact of social, cultural, political and historical contexts on 1960s news papers.

In the papers presented the main headlines and sublines are about political issues, The first paper is taking about the queen because at the time she was important and a very popular topic. The next paper talks about lawyers, both subjects are very 'grown up' and have a clear target audience of older people. Giving us some insight of what it was like in the 1960s and how anyone who was under 40 didnt read the news. The last is talking about war, this shows us that nws in the 1960s was very serious. There was no 'gossip' or light news it was just very boring.

Comments

  1. MISSING - notes on industry and conventions.

Media language - good analysis but you could look at how some of the design choices link to the ideologies, values or target audience.

Historical case studies - you need to link these to 60s context
