front page and double page spread for a hobby magazine

magazine media language:
different articles: hard news, first person, opinion piece, info or service

The covers usually have a main image to attract your target audience

colour scheme is chosen based on the main image and target audience

the masthead is typically at the top of the page, big and bold so it stands out

there is usually only one image on the cover

cover lines are used to tell you what the magazine is about and you usually have a few around 4 if not more

institutional info is placed at the bottom

different fonts are used and placed based on what you want the layout to be, fonts are usually small and simple and at the corners and sides of the main image

puffs are the same as cover lines

DPS (double page spreads) are laid out to display all the info they're talking about clearly

examples:

most front covers of hobby magazines are quite similar, very spaced out to attract attention to the main image to draw in their target audience also very poppy bright colours.
most double page spreads are packed with info about the hobby maybe contain some sore of merch like skating stickers. a few images for example, a step to step guide to do a certain thing in this case a skate boarding trick. Most magazines advertise another brand or even a person, includes quotes on the front cover.

15th september 2021

i need to make a start on my magazine

David carson quick silver - ideas

Im really inspired
with how artsy and
fun these are, theyre
 perfect for the age group
i am targeting, 14-18 year olds.

I want to take inspiration
from these and incorporate the
same type of doodly art in my
magazine cover and dps

They give you something
to look at and in my opinion
the type of art thats being
used fits perfectly with
skateboarding and that creativity.
It really attracts your eye
which is perfect for my
magazine and making it
stand out upon everyone
elses, it also makes the
process of making it very
fun and its just over all
really creative and requires a bit more effort.
Its exactly what i need to
get a high mark and show
what i can do and what ive
learnt so far in media.

what ive got so far:

I havent got much so far but you can already see im taking inspo from other magazine covers ive put on this blog and im looking forward to making it more colourful and fun.

art ideas:

SO far:

i need to change the image to my own self taken photo but this is roughly what i want it to look like

to do 17/11/21 :
roughly write article,
add small bits to front cover and dps like barcode, price etc

dps so far

FRONT PAGE COVER STORIES:

skateboarding: George ken left with broken leg from tragic skateboarding accident!!

Is skateboarding worth the risk for you or others?

Student turns up to school with a hip injury.

Famous skater explains to interviewer that he has never felt more alive then when he is on his board.

Is it the activity for you?

Turn to page 3 to a step to step saftey guide

in this magazine you can learn up to 4 different skateboarding tricks while being safe!

puff: colourful band for the cover stories, matching the colour of dps background

draw little skateboards on texts

I want to make my magazine pretty neutral while also being colourful and creative. i think you can incorporate art into pretty much anything and so i want it on the magazine to attract teens and the target audience of skaters and just anyone who might be into it. Different colours can bring a magazine  together and give it a clean finished look, linking the colours of my main cover and my double page spread will link them and bring the whole thing together. Both pieces have the same house style to keep it pretty simple and i want to add small doodles to bring attention to the text and spread out the page a bi, this should also hopefully keep the texts not looking blocky and doodles can break up blank space.
I have taken a lot of inspiration from the quiksilver magazines as they are very creative and fun, having doddles gives you a lot to look at and in my opinion it is what makes a magazine interesting.
Something like doodling would be great for my target audience as teens tend to not want to read much so which the doodles it gives you something cool to look at and it would catch your eye in a shop.

  1. Good research and initial ideas - I agree that you will need to link your ideas more specifically to skateboarding
